Mixed Media She Collage

Happy New Year 2013!!

I have started a new love and it is Mixed media using ideas from Julie Nutting's book Collage Couture and ideas that I have seen from friends using Christy Tomlinson She Art classes.  Christy has a you tube site and I have been soaking up all the gorgeous things she is making.

My first "She Collage" as I call it was inspired by Julie Nutting's book which shows you how to draw and set up the girls.  I happened to love paper dolls when I was a wee bit younger and so this kind of art is making me happy.  I also have a friend here on the blog that is encouraging me to do this as she says "it is so freeing to paint" which I have to agree with her.

This collage is on a 10x10 canvas board.

My background is distressed inks, acrylic paint, chalkboard sprays and modge podge to adhere papers.
I drew her free handed and her clothing. You cut out the pieces and modge podge them on the canvas and then you can highlight around them with Copic multiliners.

Her face and body have script on them and I used my colics to make her face.  A small flower punch is used for her hair adornment, then I stickled and liquid pearled them.

A die cut butterfly with a pearl to show off her waist.

I used some rub ons that I had like for ever from SU.  They are all over the canvas in black and a small amount of white.  I also used my copic multiliner pen to doodle.

I love romance, swirls, birds, music and I tried to show all the joys a women can have in her soul.
Swirls for whimsy, birds and butterflies for freedom, music is joyful, hearts for love and flowers for life.

I would love your opinion about this kind of art, it is fun and this was my first "She Collage" as I call it.
Thanks for stopping by today!

  1. Happy new year!!! Awwwww, this is gorgeous.. Great selection of colours.. Hugs, Brittany, xx

  2. First of all Happy New Year Kelly, I wish you and your family a wonderful 2013!

Second, I love your beautiful collage, truly gorgeous work and I just got JNs book for Christmas and have been enjoying looking through it.

Same as you, before I started to draw big eyed girls in my early teens, I used to cut girls out of magazines etc and piece bits together, so this style is after my own heart too.

I loved your way of expressing your collage in words too, I can't think of anything more perfect. Looking forward to seeing lots more of these.

    Chris :)
